Anna Wintour once said, “If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.” Maybe I’m biased but I totally agree. Your professional wardrobe goes far beyond handbags and shades. A well put together outfit can be the difference between you snagging that coveted fashion assistant position or hitting send in Gmail on a Friday night, trying to figure out where you went wrong.

A professional wardrobe isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. If you’re just starting out in your career, it can be hard to know where to begin. Do you go business or business casual? What is business casual anyway? What about a suit? Are suits still in? The questions are endless.

What are the perfect pieces for a Professional Wardrobe?

You’ll learn that there’s an art to crafting the perfect professional wardrobe and each person and industry is different. Regardless, if you’re aiming to be a celebrity event planner or the next Eva Chen, you have to start somewhere. With these key pieces, you can build a foundation for the perfect professional wardrobe.

  1. BLAZER: The quintessential professional wardrobe staple. A blazer can turn the simplest of outfits into a professionally styled look. Blazers are incredibly versatile and can be styled with almost anything, from pencil skirts to fitted slacks and everything in between. Since you can also find blazers in various styles, I recommend getting two (or even three) to keep in your wardrobe. One that’s very tailored and structured to complete your business-savvy look and a cropped, relaxed fit for those days when you want to look put together but not overly dressy.

  1. PERFECT SKIRT: Few pieces say “I’m a business woman” better than a well-fitting skirt. Skirts add a touch of sophistication and power like no other. While I will forever be an advocate of pencil skirts, the key to making this wardrobe piece work is wearing the best type for your body. If pencil skirts aren’t your thing, go for an A-line option, and midi skirts are a great choice as well. You can even add a few skirts in different silhouettes if you prefer lots of options.
  1. BLACK PUMPS: It doesn’t matter which industry you work in, what your office looks like, or what your work is on a daily basis. No professional wardrobe is complete without a pair of classic black pumps. Why a black pump? Well, a pump is one of the more comfortable shoe options out there, which is very important while we’re working. And black is one of those colors that you can pair with almost Black pumps are the first shoes you should add to your wardrobe.

  1. SIMPLE DRESS: You know why dresses are my favorite? Because you can style ONE dress numerous ways by switching up the shoes, accessories or blazer you pair it with. Talk about stretching your wardrobe! Not only are dresses the kind of pieces that allow you to maximize your wardrobe, they’re the easiest options to wear. Who wouldn’t want to put on one item and look like a boss lady?
  1. POWER SUIT: To answer the previous question: Yes, you need a suit. But no, you don’t need one that’s extra fancy and super expensive. If you’re serious about your career, you never know when the meeting that just might change everything will come along. You’ll want to be prepared, and you’ll want to look the part.

For some that might require a more structured professional suit, and for others that might be something a little more casual. Regardless of what the words suit and power mean to you, find a suit that’s comfortable and makes you feel like a boss, and have it ready to go.
